“This could be a good way to get him in there”: Kaley Cuoco Used the Oldest Trick in the Book to Get Her Big Bang Theory Crush into Her Hotel Room

Kaley Cuoco had a classic move up her sleeve when she tried to reel in her Big Bang Theory crush. Back in the day, she went old school, inviting her co-star to hang out in her hotel room—a setup straight out of the ‘How to Land Your Crush’ playbook.

But here’s the kicker: it totally backfired. Cuoco’s smooth plan hit a snag when the object of her affection didn’t take the bait. No romance, no sparks—just an awkward night to remember. So, while Cuoco may have aced her role as Penny, getting her real-life crush to fall for her proved a little trickier than sitcom love stories.

Kaley Cuoco thought she could pull a fast one on her Big Bang Theory crush, Johnny Galecki, using a classic excuse: a bug in her hotel room. But guess what? It totally flopped! This little gem comes from Jessica Radloff’s book, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.

The book dives into the wild ride of this 12-season sitcom, packed with exclusive interviews from the cast—including Cuoco and Galecki, who were basically TV royalty as Leonard and Penny. They’ve got a history, dating in real life for nearly two years, and this story just adds to their epic saga. Cuoco shared her cheeky plan, explaining how she asked Galecki for help with the creepy-crawly but he shot her down. She revealed (via US Magazine):

I was like, ‘Ooh, this could be a good way to get him in there!’ But that didn’t work. I couldn’t believe he turned me down. I still think he turned me down because he knew what I was doing. I used the bug as an excuse, and he still did not come over.

Galecki kept it playful, quipping, “Well, I’m not that easy, Kaley. At least take me to dinner and a show first!” Classic back-and-forth, right? This story just proves that sometimes, love can be a total comedy show! In the end, it looks like even the most iconic TV romances can have their awkward moments—proving that whether on-screen or off, love’s always a little complicated!

The Big Bang Theory’s Casting Twist: How Kaley Cuoco’s Penny Replaced Amanda Walsh’s Katie

Behind every successful sitcom, there’s a tale of what could’ve been. Enter Amanda Walsh, the original female lead of The Big Bang Theory, who played Katie—a character with a much harsher vibe than the beloved Penny, portrayed by Kaley Cuoco. Early test audiences didn’t hold back, expressing their disdain for Katie, which led the show’s creators to rethink their strategy. Bill Prady shared,

In the first pilot, the female character (who, at that point, was named Katie) is kind of rough. She’s dangerous in a way and wasn’t very nice to the guys. They hated her, but what was amazing was that they were defending Leonard and Sheldon so much.

The audience saw the guys as naive, childlike figures who didn’t need a toxic presence in their lives. Chuck Lorre added,

They were very vulnerable, and the audience didn’t want a toxic presence around them. That’s why we rewrote Katie to become Penny and made her much more charmed by the guys and kind to them, as opposed to a woman who would take advantage of them.

With that feedback, Katie was transformed into Penny, a character far more charming and kind-hearted. While both creators praised Walsh’s talent, they acknowledged that the role was fundamentally misconceived. It’s a classic Hollywood twist—sometimes, the character you lose leads to a cultural icon.
