The airline already runs flights to Düsseldorf, west Germany, from the small airport, which is about a third of the size of London Heathrow.

The Berlin flights will run twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays, according to Chronicle Live, and will be the only service connecting the Northeast to the German capital.

Seats are already on sale at the bargain price of £44.99.

Berlin is a favourite amongst tourists – for its cultural history, vibrant food scene, great beer and night life.

The city certainly has a chequered past, after it was ripped apart by World War II and later the erection of the Berlin Wall.

But it’s been rebuilt in recent decades and now serves as a cultural hub, full of galleries and museums – many of which commemorate those lost in the Holocaust.

Berlin’s food scene is internationally renowned, demonstrating high-level cuisine not only from German but all over the world.

It’s particularly popular at Christmas time, when tourists can enjoy a stein of beer or mug of warn glühwein (mulled wine) at one of the Christmas markets.

There’s numerous other choices for al-fresco ale in the city too, like Prater Garten — aka the city’s oldest beer garden.

It’s still going strong after first opening in 1837, and still attracting visitors in huge numbers.

And the nocturnally inclined can venture out to one of Berlin’s world-famous techno clubs, such as Berghain.

Berlin is also home to some great cheap football games.

Ryan Gray, a travel reporter for The Sun, recommends watching a Bundesliga game, featuring local rivals such as Union and Hertha.

News of the new flights comes after a new high-speed train linking Berlin to Paris was announced last month.

Passengers will be able to get from Berlin to Paris in just eight hours using the service, which will be run by German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and France’s SNCF.

The first departure is scheduled to happen in December.
