Vince Gilligan’s Better Call Saul’s creeping up on the day we all knew was coming—the moment Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman. And it’s gonna be rough. It’s a tragedy, Gilligan spilled, clearly bummed about the impending transformation.
The show’s been a wild ride, moving from a quick Saul Goodman setup to a deep dive into Jimmy’s life. Gilligan and co-creator Peter Gould found themselves growing more attached to Jimmy than anticipated, and now they face the bitter reality of his eventual decline. Gilligan asserted (via The Guardian):
We started off the series writing about Jimmy McGill, a guy we figured would very quickly turn into Saul Goodman. And as the first season of Better Call Saul progressed we realised, Gee, there’s a lot more story to tell about this guy. And as the seasons went by it dawned on us that we liked this guy better, and we started to put off the appearance of Saul Goodman.
And now we realise that we have a bit of a tragedy on our hands: this man inevitably must become Saul Goodman, but we dread the day that it will happen, because it may have a large hand in why we don’t see Kim Wexler [Rhea Seehorn, playing Jimmy’s only real friend and love interest] around any more.
But as they went along, Jimmy’s charm made it harder to let him go. Unlike Walter White’s dramatic shift into Heisenberg in Breaking Bad, watching Jimmy’s decline is more of a slow burn. “Jimmy McGill is the guy you wanna go have a beer with,” Gilligan asserted. Losing that part of him for Saul Goodman is gonna hurt.
And get this—Gilligan’s also dealing with continuity headaches. Remember that throwaway line in Breaking Bad about Jimmy’s second wife? It’s causing some major head-scratching in the spin-off. He joked:
Those lines make you want to go back in a time machine and kick yourself in the butt for writing them. Those moments present challenges, to say the least.

Karolina Wydra Joins Rhea Seehorn In Vince Gilligan’s New Apple TV+ Series
Karolina Wydra teaming up with Rhea Seehorn for Vince Gilligan’s new Apple TV+ series. This project, which has a two-season order, is shrouded in secrecy, but it’s been playfully dubbed Breaking Good.
Gilligan’s taking a break from his usual gritty antiheroes with this one. The show’s a mild sci-fi twist on our world, bending reality with a focus on the human condition, reminiscent of E.T. He revealed (via Deadline):
After 15 years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes… and who’s more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn?
Wydra, known for True Blood and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., will play Ana, an optimistic young woman. Filming is underway in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Looks like this new venture is set to be a fascinating shift from Gilligan’s past projects.
