‘Today speaks volumes’ – Rangers fans convinced Clement isn’t a fan of one star after key decision during Motherwell tie

RANGERS eventually battled to the Premier Sports Cup final by beating Motherwell 2-1 in the semi-final at Hampden Park.

It was an eventful day for manager Philippe Clement, who made some interesting decisions on his team during the match.

The Belgian subbed off his captain James Tavernier with the score still 1-1, also taking off goalscorer Cyriel Dessers, injured Tom Lawrence and defender Leon Balogun.

And the withdrawal of Balogun drew reaction from Gers supporters, particularly surrounding the player replacing the Nigerian.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo has played all across the backline since signing for Rangers in the summer, so the fact he came on for Balogun isn’t a surprise in itself.

But given that centre-back Robin Propper was also sat on the bench and Clement opted to bring on a natural full-back in his position, eyebrows were raised by the Ibrox side’s support.

Many Gers supporters took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss their opinions on Propper and what Clement’s decision could mean.

One fan posted: “Tell you what, that’s a big snub for Propper.

“Still convinced that was a signing sprung on Clement, came out of nowhere.”

A second supporter agreed, replying: “Said the same, first time I saw him I didn’t think he was the answer and today speaks volumes.”

Another fan said: “Propper now fourth choice.”

A fourth commented: “Why did we buy Propper?”

The decision to bring off Tavernier also resulted in much discussion.

The right-back had clashed with co-captain Jack Butland as Gers trailed in the first half, before Clement replaced him with Dujon Sterling just after the hour mark.

Premier Sports co-commentator Michael Stewart had his say on Tavernier, saying: “He’s maybe not had his best game but he’s still the captain and the leader of the team and that was probably the main reason why he was kept in the summer.

“Now it’s 1-1 in a semi-final with 25 minutes to go and he’s hooked.”
