In the 40-year time span of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball franchise, the series has witnessed 21 Super Saiyan transformations. These Super Saiyan transformations have upgraded with time and have provided the Saiyans with the power that they needed to save their world and take down dangerous villains.
Each of these transformations has different power levels, and some of them are even unique to a particular Saiyan character. However, these Super Saiyan transformations are sometimes executed differently in the anime series than in the manga. The biggest example of this is the Super Saiyan God transformation.
The enticing godly power is one of the strongest Super Saiyan transformations that has been introduced in the series. And while it was greatly emphasized in the manga by Toriyama, Toei Animation did not give much preference to it. The anime series only introduced it for a limited amount of time, which reduced its importance in the entire Dragon Ball storyline.
The Eccentric Power of Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God made its first appearance during the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, when Goku and Beerus got into a one-on-one match to find out which god was stronger. However, it was one of the first transformations that Goku did not achieve through training. He was given this power through a ritual that allowed five other Saiyans to transfer their powers within a single Saiyan.
It takes a little time to fully comprehend the power of the Super Saiyan God, but when it is done, it can be the most dangerous transformation yet. Although it can be used for a limited time and drains a lot of energy, once Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan God, he can maintain the same speed and power level even after the transformation fades away.
The transformation was also heavily used during Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the Tournament of Power. Even Vegeta was able to use it in his fight against Broly. However, with new transformations like Super Saiyan Blue and Ultra Instinct, the Super Saiyan God transformation lost its importance.
Super Saiyan God Could Have Been Even More Legendary
Dragon Ball anime fans might not know this, but the Super Saiyan God transformation has been given a lot of importance in the Dragon Ball manga. Akira Toriyama made sure that the epic power got the respect it deserved, and he even upgraded it by letting Goku use it frequently and learn more about it.
Even Vegeta used it in the Dragon Ball Super series when he fought Black Goku and Zamasu. He was able to unlock this transformation without any ritual, which made it even more exciting. Plus, he was able to switch between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue, allowing him to access the powers from both transformations.
Super Saiyan God had a lot of potential, but it was all ruined because Toei Animation did not emphasize it much. It was a frequently used power in the manga, but the anime rarely showed it after introducing it in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.
