The director talking about Tom Holland noted that he is one of the greatest and most exciting young actors in the world, and it’s an honor to welcome him back to the West World. Critics after the announcement of the actor’s return to play Romeo in the West End play mentioned that the actor, who has gained worldwide recognition for playing Spider-Man in over six Marvel movies, will now have a chance to polish his acting skills and they are looking forward to it.

Now, Deadline reports, Francesca Amewudah-Rivers has been announced to play Juliet opposite Holland’s Romeo. The actress, who starred in the British TV show Bad Education, has portrayed Lady Macduff in Sarah Frankcom’s version of Macbeth for the Globe Theatre in 2022.

The actress, according to Huffington Post, said,

“I’m so grateful to be making my West End debut as Juliet with The Jamie Lloyd Company. It’s a dream to be joining this team of incredible artists with Jamie at the helm. I’m excited to bring fresh energy to this story alongside Tom and to welcome new audiences to the theater.”

Jamie Lloyd also expressed his excitement for Francesca Amewudah-Rivers joining the team alongside Tom Holland.

Tom Holland to compete for the best Romeo title with Leonardo DiCaprio

The announcement of Tom Holland gearing up to perform the character of Romeo in the West End revival of Romeo and Juliet reminded fans of Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of the character. The Titanic actor appeared as Romeo in 1996’s romantic crime film William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, opposite Claire Danes, who played Juliet in the movie.

Upon its release, the movie received a positive response from the audience and the critics, with DiCaprio being praised for his performance. The actor won the Silver Bear for Best Actor. Being a significant movie back in the day, with critics and the audience appreciating every aspect of the movie, it is no surprise that every single time a new version of the character comes out, it will be compared to DiCaprio’s Romeo.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the biggest and most successful actors in the entertainment industry and has set a benchmark for the character. But Holland’s career trajectory as an actor and his commitment to not only understanding his character but also embracing himself in it shows that he is going to do his best and make sure that he does justice to one of the most beloved of William Shakespeare’s characters.

It will be interesting to see if Holland matches the audience’s expectations and beats DiCaprio for the title of being the best Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet will open at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre in May and run until August.
