Troy beats North Carolina A&T 89-75, advances to quarterfinals of Women’s NIT

Makayia Hallmon scored 21 points as Troy topped North Carolina A&T 89-75 in a Women’s NIT second-round game on Friday night in Greensboro, N.C.

With the victory, the Trojans (21-11) advance to the tournament quarterfinals, AKA the “Great 8.” They will host Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe (21-13) at 6 p.m. Monday.

On Friday, Troy had four players in double-figures scoring against an Aggies team that allowed just 55.3 points per game coming in. In addition to Hallmon, Tai’Sheka Porchia scored 15, Ja’Mia Hollings 14 (with 10 rebounds) and Leilani Guion 13 off the bench, including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers.

“Our season didn’t start great, but we are having good things happen now,” Troy coach Chanda Rigby said. “I told them that good things will happen as long as we have faith. And we kept believing, and the light shined through. It feels so good to win. I’ve dreamt about being this far for as long as I’ve been a D-I coach. I’m beyond thankful for our staff, players and administration because it wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Jordyn Dorsey scored 18 points to lead N.C. A&T, whose season ends at 22-12. Chaniya Clark (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Paris Locke (12 points, 11 rebounds) both had double-doubles for the Aggies, a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference.

Troy swept the regular-season series over ULM, winning 94-83 in Monroe on Feb. 1 and 81-77 at Trojan Arena on Feb. 17. The Warhawks advanced to the NIT quarterfinals by beating Southern Miss 84-71 on Wednesday.

Admission for Monday’s game is $5, plus $10 for parking. The Trojans drew 2,196 for a first-round win over Florida International last Monday.

“We got a very good team in ULM coming to Trojan Arena,” Rigby said. “The winner gets into the ‘Fab 4,’ so we need Trojan fans to pack that arena and witness history. It almost feels like we can’t lose when Trojan Arena is packed, and the fans are behind us.”

The WNIT semifinals (AKA “Fab 4″) take place April 2-3, with the championship game on April 6.
