TWO men have been charged after a far-right rally clashed with anti-racism protesters in Glasgow.
Cops say the men were arrested in connection with Saturday’s planned demo at George Square.
Officers confirmed that a 40-year-old man has since been charged with an alleged hate crime.
And a 20-year-old man was charged with allegedly carrying an offensive weapon.
The men are due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.
It comes after cops kettled around two dozen ‘Celtic Ultras’ while pro-UK protesters chanted the Billy Boys during a Glasgow immigration demo.
The group, wearing green masks, were escorted by police and mounted officers as they passed the far-right rally in the city centre.
They were marched past hundreds of anti-immigration protesters – many carrying Union Jack flags and sand the ‘Billy Boys’ song as the ultras passed by.Â
Scores of protesters who attended the far-right rally gathered on one side of the square.
Many waved union flags while one flag had “stop the boats” written across it.
While, hundreds of counter-protesters from an anti-racism demo gathered on the other side of the square.
People in the crowd were waving Palestine flags and anti-racism placards.
Cops separated the two crowds to prevent any trouble kicking off.
The Glasgow rally was backed by far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
Police Scotland were placed on high alert ahead of the demo.
A spokesperson for the force said: “A proportionate policing plan was in place for a planned protest in George Square, Glasgow.
“A 40-year-old man was arrested and charged for a hate crime and a 20-year-old man was arrested and charged for carrying an offensive weapon.
“They are due to due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.”
“Officers contained a small group of people to engage with them, maintain public safety and minimise disruption.”
