Valley standout hits career milestone in YSU win

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Former Kennedy Catholic star and current Youngstown State senior Malia Magestro surpassed 1,000 career points during the Penguins 60-52 victory over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday night.

The accomplishment came on a lay-up early in the 2nd quarter. Magestro would finish with a team-high 15 points while adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

“It was my dad’s birthday too and that’s all he wanted as a present for his birthday so it’s really awesome to reach this milestone,” Magestro said. “I’ve had a lot of good teammates over the years and just really excited to be able to do with this team on this special night and such a good win for us as a program.”

Two other Penguins finished with double digits scoring, with Jewel Watkins scoring 14 and Bella Samz pitching in 10 points off the bench.

YSU junior Abby Liber led YSU with 11 rebounds and added 8 points. Former Warren Harding standout and Cleveland State transfer Faith Burch piled up 6 points and 8 boards as well.

The Penguins’ largest lead was 10 points and they never trailed in the game despite fending off a couple St. Bonaventure runs in the second half.

YSU improves to a perfect 2-0 on the young season and will next face Clarion on Friday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
