There’s no doubt that gamers are loving Astro Bot so far. The game is being dubbed as PlayStation’s own Super Mario 64 moment, albeit nearly thirty years later! For the uninitiated gamers, this is a brand-new character platformer title that uses PlayStation’s brand and nostalgia to expand traditional approaches to gameplay.
The game was released for PlayStation 5 on September 6th and managed to generate extremely positive buzz ahead of its market debut, as underlined by the fact that the game is currently one of the highest rate ones for 2024. However, developer Team Asobi isn’t just done yet, as it is hinting towards some of the biggest collaborations for the game with future updates!
Astro Bot Credits Hint at Assassin’s Creed, Stellar Blade and Other DLC Cameos
Astro Bot’s successful launch proves that it’s more than just a cameo-filled advertisement for PlayStation, but that doesn’t stop the game from featuring tons of guest characters. While the original game had lots of references and easter eggs, Astro Bot takes things to the next level by turning cameos into collectibles called VIP Bots.
Currently, we have a total of 169 VIP Bots to gather in the game after the launch, and while that number seems high, Team Asobi is already planning to boost that number. The game’s credits include trademarks for several franchises and series that still don’t have a VIP Bot representation.
The games that can be found in credits include Assassin’s Creed, Raymans, Worms, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Beyond Good & Evil, and the most shocking of all, Croc: Legends of the Gobbos.
Since none of the titles we’ve mentioned above are referenced in the game via VIP Bots or other easter eggs, the developers are likely planning to add them as post-launch DLCs. Team Asobi has already stated the game will receive several updates in the future, but it wasn’t confirmed whether they’ll bring VIP bots.
However, what’s more interesting is the fact that the franchises listed above aren’t the only ones that have missing cameos right now. Originally, we were supposed to see Twisted Metal‘s Fat Princess and Sweet Tooth as well. They were even featured in the concept art of the game but didn’t make it to the final build.
Sony’s Unique Way to Celebrate Astro Bot‘s Launch
In a unique move, Sony Interactive Entertainment has switched up the profile images of its official X, Instagram, and Facebook accounts to the beloved Astro Bot to celebrate the launch of the game.
Platform mascots have been long celebrated by Sony, who, unlike rivals, tend to showcase multiple mascot characters at a given time. In the past, we’ve seen the company giving Spyro and Crash Bandicoot star treatment, the PlayStation 2 era brought several mascots, Sackboy debuted in the PlayStation 3 phase, and now Astro Bot has joined the group.
Gamers and critics alike have praised Astro Bot. The title has already managed to become the second-best game of 2024 and pass the mark for the 74th-best game of all time. The gameplay, alongside cameos of several iconic PlayStation characters, has filled the game with nostalgia.
