Hannah Jacobs, aged 13, was intolerant to dairy products, fish and eggs and died after drinking a hot chocolate she thought was made with soya milk in Costa Coffee.

The schoolgirl from Barking, east London, passed on February 8, 2023 after a suspected anaphylactic reaction.

A year after her death, her understandably-upset mother Abimbola Duyile spoke out on how the tragedy was avoidable as she laid bare her grief.

As Susanna, 53, asked Abimbola what she wanted Good Morning Britain viewers to know, she replied: “For a mother to go through this, for anyone to go through this, is hard.

“It’s terrible. There’s no good feeling because you have lost your world.

“I’ve got two kids – my kids are my world – and no parent should go through this or suffer this way.

“To see your child suffer her last breath on earth screaming …” before the camera panned to mum of three Susanna shaking her head and keeping back tears.

Abimbola continued: “She didn’t want to die.

“That is painful.

“So I just want anyone that is struggling or has a child that has allergies, to make sure this never happens again.”

Talk then turned to EpiPens, with Hannah believing she couldn’t take hers to school.

A medic then highlighted the importance of the adrenaline-filled devices for sufferers, and urged them to always be carried.

Susanna, who recently headed on holiday to Ibiza with her three sons, branded the situation “absolutely devastating.”

Abimbola had told she had reinforced her daughter’s severe allergy to the Costa Coffee server, even asking her to give the milk-frother an extra was to make sure there was no dairy contamination.

Previously, we reported how when Hannah took a sip from the hot drink while waiting at the dental clinic’s reception, she immediately told her mother it was not soya milk, sparking concerns it contained dairy products.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON FOOD ALLERGIES?

APPROXIMATELY 44 per cent of people in Britain have an allergy or allergic disorder of some kind, says the charity Allergy UK.

Rates are higher in under-35s and lowest in pensioners.

The most common food allergies, according to the NHS, are:

  • Cow milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Nuts, such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews, pistachios and Brazil nuts
  • Soy beans, chickpeas and peas
  • Shellfish
  • Wheat

You may be allergic to a food if it makes you feel dizzy, lightheaded, sick or itchy, brings you out in hives or swollen lips or eyes, or causes diarrhoea, vomiting, a runny nose, cough, breathlessness or wheezing.

She was urgently rushed to a nearby pharmacy, where chemists gave her an EpiPen – a self-administered medicine used as the first response in case of anaphylactic attacks.

Despite an ambulance crew shortly arriving at the scene to rush her to a hospital – and several attempts of resuscitation – medical staff were unable to save the child’s life.
