For decades, Hollywood has had a habit of revisiting classic films. While it has often led to mixed results, that has not stopped studios and directors from trying their hand at different remakes. However, not all of them have gone according to plan. Most recently, it was revealed that the Independence Day director, Roland Emmerich, would be turning a legendary film into a television series for the world to see.
However, there is something about this rumored Emmerich remake that has put fans particularly on edge. And it might have something to do with the 68-year-old’s last failed project, Moonfall.
Roland Emmerich plans for a Lawrence of Arabia remake
In 1962, the world was introduced to the iconic film, Lawrence of Arabia. While Peter O’Toole’s stunning performance cemented his place among some of Hollywood’s finest, it looks like the movie could be remade by none other than Roland Emmerich. A report from The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the director had plans to turn the film into a 3-season series. However, his idea has not been picked up as of yet.
Emmerich’s plans for his remake include a change in title as the series would be titled Lawrence in Arabia. Although the story would still revolve around T.E. Lawrence’s complex life and the political intricacies of the Arab Revolt during World War I, there would be a few new additions. With more characters and different storylines to unravel, it could turn out to be a hit. However, given the director’s recent bad luck with his projects, it has left fans questioning – will it live up to the grandeur and legacy of the original?
The world may have to wait for Emmerich’s remake to be greenlit before making assumptions. However, with the White House Down director’s recent downfall, there is no saying how the series could play out.
Why Roland Emmerich’s Lawrence of Arabia remake could fall short
Over the years, Roland Emmerich has proved to be an amazing director. After all, with films like Mel Gibson’s The Patriot, Will Smith’s Independence Day, whose sequel the actor abandoned, and the iconic apocalypse film, 2012, the 68-year-old has made quite the name for himself. However, his recent work has not reached the same level of success as his previous ones.
Most notably, Emmerich’s latest 2022 film, Moonfall, ended up falling short after its release. It was a science fiction disaster film that embodied the director’s signature style of apocalyptic destruction. But it did not go to plan. The film’s intense storyline followed a group of unlikely heroes who had to prevent the Moon from crashing into Earth and promised to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
However, that did not end up happening. Although the movie blended elements of space adventure with Emmerich’s trademark visual effects and high-stakes drama, critics and fans were rather unimpressed. Despite the impressive CGI and out-of-this-world set pieces, Moonfall was met with many mixed reviews. In fact, viewers even ended up pointing out how uninteresting the character development of Patrick Wilson’s Brian Harper really was.
