Outer Banks star Drew Starkey joins James Bond actor Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming romance film Queer and we’re crossing our fingers his character will get a much better story and deserving ending. He plays Eugene Allerton, a discharged American Navy serviceman and drug user.
Knowing the works of Guadagnino, fans should expect lots of melancholic scenes, but this is definitely much better than what Starkey’s minor character suffered in Netflix’s The Devil All The Time.
Drew Starkey Says Queer is His Most Challenging Project to Date
Queer is Drew Starkey’s biggest movie role yet, and he is collaborating with two of the biggest names in the industry. He stars opposite Daniel Craig’s William Lee, who gets infatuated with his charismatic yet mysterious character.
While speaking with Variety, the 30-year-old actor admitted that his role in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming masterpiece is the most daunting experience he’s ever had in his career. “He was very hard to crack and it was the biggest challenge I’ve ever had as an actor, which was really fun,” he told the outlet.
He described Allerton as “an ambiguous figure and kind of restricted,” but once he figured him out and shed his inhibitions to get into filming, the production went smooth sailing. Of course, there was still intimidation because of the pressure to live up to the role.
It’s evident that Starkey enjoyed his time on the set. He also expressed interest in working with the director again in the future, and he wished to have more variety of projects to deal with. Playing Allerton was truly a daunting task to undertake, but he’s got more complexity and depth than Starkey’s Tommy Matson in The Devil All The Time.
He didn’t have a nice ending in the film if truth be told. Spider-Man actor Tom Holland unforgivingly beat his character down to a pulp with a tire iron. Fans can say he deserved it after bullying Arvin Russell’s adopted sister, Lenora. He also had little exposure in the movie so many would not even recognize him.
But now that he’s made it to one of the most anticipated queer romance movies of the year, we hope there’s a fitting conclusion for both of the main characters. Besides, it has been revealed that William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel was left unfinished, so the writer and director were the ones who placed that period in the end.
Drew Starkey Always Had a Penchant for Acting
Since Starkey is one of the fastest-rising stars today, it’s great to know a bit of his background prior to debuting in Hollywood. While having a chat with Pop Culturalist, he shared his love for theater, and as someone who comes from a family of artists, he ended up studying it in high school and college.
After finishing school, he moved to Atlanta to join his friends who established a production company and started auditioning for roles. He began his career by starring as supporting characters, and he got his biggest break when he landed the role of Rafe Cameron in Netflix’s Outer Banks.
Queer hits theaters worldwide on November 27, 2024.
