Week 4 Hollis Wright Player of the Week earns runaway victory in poll

The Week 4 Hollis Wright Player of the Week for the Birmingham area was perfect through the air and ran for more than 30 yards per carry in a runaway win last Friday. He also ran away with the balloting in the weekly survey, earning 58 percent of the vote.

Leeds senior quarterback Conner Nelson picked up 34,207 of the 58,586 votes cast the Week 4 poll.

In a 42-14 win at Class 5A, Region 6 foe Lincoln, Nelson completed all five of his passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and ran four times for 127 yards and two TDs. Nelson sparked the No. 4 Green Wave to their fourth straight win this season and pushed their region record to 2-0.

Corner junior linebacker Rhett Cofer was second in the poll with 32 percent of the votes – 18,723 total. He had 15 tackles in the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets’ 22-8 win over Ramsay, Corner’s first win over the Rams in three games. Cofer had two tackles for a loss and caught two passes for 25 yards on offense.

Carver senior Dimitri Howard was third in the balloting with 3 percent of the votes. Howard caught 10 passes for 234 yards as the Rams beat Briarwood Christian 20-7 to improve to 2-0 on the year and in Class 5A, Region 5 play. Two of Howard’s receptions went for touchdowns as Carver beat Briarwood for the first time in three tries.
