A lighthouse-inspired luxury home was originally out on the market for £10million but failed to find a buyer

Where is Chesil Cliff House and what happened to it?

The famous Grand Designs lighthouse can be found in North Devon.

After years of renovation, Chesil Cliff House first went on the market in July 2022 with an asking price of £10million.

The five-bedroom luxury home was taken off the market in February 2023, and was relisted just four months later at £7.5million.

The 3-acre listing that took 12-years to build includes an infinity pool, a storm room, four receptions and a glass lighthouse tower.

It is located on a private beach with views that stretch over Croyde Bay, Saunton Sands and Lundy Island.

The former owner initially paid £1.4m for the original house with panoramic sea views before he spent millions on the Grand Design renovation that left him in serious debt.

Who owns Chesil Cliff House now?

By January 2024, after failing to find a buyer, creditors called in receivers to put the coastal mansion on the market for a knock down price cut price of £5.25m.

Therefore, the Grand Designs ligthouse luxury home is currently owned by Joint Receivers and Savills UK property management.

What happened to former owner Edward Short?

The work to Chesil Cliff House set the former owner Edward Short, back over £5million, double the £2.5million budget he set during original planning application in 2011.

It also cost him his marriage to ex-wife Hazel.

The couple called time on their marriage after the pressure of the property put too much strain on their marriage.

Edward now has a new fiancee, nurse Jalia Nambasa, while he and his ex-wife Hazel, who also has a new partner, still remain friends.

In an exclusive interview with the The Sun, he said the project had left him close to bankruptcy and that he now classes himself as a “minus millionaire”.

“The debt is a lot higher than £5.25million,” he tells the Sun.

“Technically most millionaires do owe millions but what they have in assets is usually much greater than what they owe.

“I’ve managed to turn to the dark side and become a minus millionaire.”

Still planning to borrow a further £2million to rebuild a crumbling drive on the stunning cliffside property, Edward says he is keeping his hopes up for a potential buyer.

“The investors and I are still debating the best way out,” he says.

“Mentally I already know I’ve lost everything I put into the house so it would have to be a miracle upon miracles but the only exit plan, in my opinion, is to build a new entrance. Without that I don’t think it will sell.”

Who has tried to buy Chesil Cliff House?

Devon multi-millionaire Matt Fiddes, who was Michael Jackson’s former bodyguard had tabled a £7.5m bid for the Croyde property back in 2022, but his offer was refused.

It is also rumoured that celebrities such as the One Direction singer, Harry Styles, were previously interested in the property.

When was the house on Grand Designs?

The house appeared on Channel 4’s Grand Designs in October 2019 and was dubbed the saddest ever by some viewers.

The episode followed Edward and his family as misfortune beset the project leaving the house unfinished and with the family plunged into millions of pounds worth of debt.

The show also revealed that the process had taken a strain on Edward’s personal life, resulting in his split from his wife Hazel.
