Alongside the iconic film, there’s plenty of other Christmas hits too from the likes of White Christmas to Elf to The Muppet Christmas Carol.
And if you don’t fancy the more traditional Christmas film, you also have Die Hard, Gremlins and much more to enjoy.
Tickets for GFT’s December and Christmas Programmes will go on sale on Wednesday, November 20 from Glasgowfilm.org and the GFT Box Office.
The GFT is celebrating its 50th birthday in 2024 and their programme has a bit of something for every taste with beloved Christmas classics and seasonal family staples screening alongside some more adult festive offerings.

‘Crimbo Limbo season’
GFT will provide a mix of winter watches in the week between Christmas and New Year. It will include Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, Wayne Wang’s Smoke, John Huston’s James Joyce Adaption The Dead and Ingmar Bergman’s period drama Fanny and Alexander.
Also shown during that will be Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, Leos Carax’s new self-portrait It’s Not Me (C’est Pas Moi) and Carax’s earlier ‘Holy Motors’.
CineMasters season
The long-running CineMasters season celebrates directors and key figures from filmmaking history, giving them an opportunity to watch their work on the big screen.
This year, it is devoted to Bill Douglas. In his short career he made four films, an autobiographical trilogy My Children, My Ain Folk and My Way home about his childhood and Comrades, about a ‘momentous’ moment in English history.
They will screen alongside the new documentary ‘Bill Douglas – My Best Friend’ which tells the story of the friendship between him and lifelong companion Peter Jewell.
The special screening of Bill Douglas – My Best Friend on Wednesday 11 December will be followed by a Q&A with the director Jack Archer.
Focus Hong Kong
This is the UK festival dedicated to celebrating cinema and filmmakers of Hong Kong. It will return to the GFT in December with three screenings.
That includes the UK premiere of Obedience, the latest film by acclaimed documentarian Wong Siu-Pong. Ray Yeung’s queer drama All Shall Be Well and the 4K restoration of Hong Kong classic July Rhapsody will also be shown.
Special Screenings
GFT often has Q&As with filmmakers and film stars and there’s a number of them over December with special screenings.
A special screening of the new documentary The Contestant, which tells the true story of a man who lived for 15 months inside a small room, naked and starving but completely unaware his life was being broadcast on national TV in Japan. A recorded Q&A with the contestant himself, Nabusi, will follow.
Other special screenings and Q&As will include the new documentary Liverpool Story, Grand Theft Hamlet and 2073.
A special screening of Palestine: Five Short Films from Bethlehem Cultural Festival followed by a Q&A with Dr Abdelfattah Abusrour from Alrowwad Centre for Arts and Culture, Bethlehem, will be hosted by Dr Cairsti Russell.
The films are created and directed by Palestinians and give insight into generations of struggle.
New Releases
Must-see new releases and re-releases playing at GFT in December include Conclave, All We Imagine as Light, Maya and the Wave, The Contestant, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, Grand Theft Hamlet, Nightbitch, Memories of a Burning Body, Queer, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, Rumours, A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things, The Universal Theory and Spirited Away.
Accessible Screenings
There will also be a number of accessible screenings. Access Film Club, delivered in partnership with National Autistic Society Scotland, includes a film screening and post-film chat. The Princess Bride is this month’s and will cost £6.50.
An autism-friendly screening of three Wallace & Gromit classics also takes place, with every child attending receiving a free ticket for themselves and two for accompanying adults.
The GFT’s monthly deaf-friendly film event will present a screening of Queer.
Movie Memories, GFT’s dementia-friendly film event, will mark the festive season with a screening of 1940s romantic comedy Remember the Night. Designed to enable people living with dementia to socialise in a safe and welcoming environment, tickets for Movie Memories are just £3, including free refreshments and live music.
