Who is Kyle Butler?

Kyle Butler is a 29-year-old from Cannon Close, Ellisfield.

He has been jailed for life for attempted murder against his ex-partner Desiree Puddy.

The pair were introduced by friends in July 2018 and quickly fell in love.

After five months of dating, they decided to move in with each other.

A year later, they began trying for a baby, and Desiree fell pregnant in 2020.

The following year, in 2021, Desiree fell pregnant again, and they went on to have a daughter.

Butler began isolating her from friends and family too, and would often spend her salary on gambling.

In June 2022, after three years together, Desiree decided to end the relationship.

What did Kyle Butler do?

Kyle’s ex-partner Desiree Puddy woke up to find him standing over her with a knife against her throat saying he was going to kill her in front of their two young children.

He then set their kids’ bedroom alight, having barricaded the stairs and corridors of the house to prevent their escape.

Thankfully Butler’s sister had alerted the police after he made a sinister call to her revealing his plans to kill Desiree.

Desiree tried to grab the knife from Butler, nearly slicing off her finger, while their children sobbed in her arms.

She was then stabbed three times by her ex, while a police officer was also hurt before he was finally brought under control.

Thankfully, Desiree and her children survived but were taken to hospital with five other officers to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Where is Kyle Butler now?

Butler was charged with attempted murder, arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and wounding with intent.

He pleaded guilty to arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and wounding with intent but denied attempted murder.

Following a trial at Winchester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of attempted murder.

The investigation also revealed google searches on Butler’s phone relating to “sentencing for manslaughter”.

On May 30, 2023, Butler was sentenced to life imprisonment.

He must serve at least 19 years before his imprisonment can be reviewed.

In a victim impact statement, his ex-partner said: “Every day is challenging for me. I cannot sleep, I cannot walk the streets alone, I have to have someone with me because I am scared.

“I suffer with anxiety, PTSD and panic attacks and I feel like I can’t breathe.’

“It’s heartbreaking for two little children who should have been protected by their daddy.

“As their mummy I did all I could to protect them and hold them tightly.

“The scars on the outside may heal but the scars on the inside will never heal.”

Sentencing, Judge Morris said: “Armed with the hawksbill knife, you place it at the throat of your sleeping partner.

“Her impact statement describes the terror she felt waking up to find you with that knife at her throat. It is every woman’s nightmare and understandably, her fear continues today.”

She told the court that by the time police gained access Butler had “set fire to a bath towel and a mattress in a bedroom” and the floor was “barricaded with items”.

She described the incident as a “premeditated, planned and weaponised attack” and said his “primary intention was to kill” his ex-partner.
