Why Eva Longoria’s Sophia Was a Better Match for Jake Than Amy Santiago

There are quite a few on-screen sitcom couples who make us believe in true love. From The Office’s Jim and Pam to Modern Family’s Phil and Claire, these couples are single-handedly responsible for taking our expectations to a whole new level. One such couple is Brooklyn 99’s Jake and Amy. Throughout the early seasons, fans are rooting for the couple that gives off enemies-to-lovers vibes. When they finally get together, it’s like a breath of fresh air.

However, there was another love interest in the show that could have been the one for Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta – Eva Longoria’s Sophia. The badass defense attorney whose life gets tangled with a reckless detective. While Peraltiago was the endgame, we can’t help but wonder if Sophia was a better match for Jake.

Was Sophia Better Suited for Jake in Brooklyn 99?

After a series of failed relationships, Andy Samberg’s Jake found his match in Eva Longoria’s Sophia. They began their romantic endeavor in season 2 episode 6, conveniently titled, Jake and Sophia.

While they have a good start in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it is soon revealed that the woman he clicked with is the defense attorney assigned to his case. After a heated battle in court, the two decide to give each other a chance on the condition that they don’t bring up their work since lawyers and detectives don’t really go hand in hand.

In episode 14, The Defense Rests, Jake and Sophia go their separate ways when once again their jobs interfere with their relationship. Thus, the power couple that could have been came to an end.

This brings us to our main point – was Sophia better for Jake than Melissa Fumero’s Amy? For starters, Sophia was smart, intelligent, and a total badass just like Amy. However, she also matched Jake’s goofiness to the T.

She understood Jake’s Die Hard references, indulged in hot wings with him, and they had a ton of fun together. When their hotel room ended up having more creepy dolls than space to sit, Sophia was actually pretty excited to spend the night in the room. In fact, she was the one who booked the terrifying room in the first place.

Unfortunately, fate had different plans. Still, Sophia had a good effect on Jake’s life. She helped take his mind off Amy and eventually, along the way, made him a bit more mature for his true soulmate. Sometimes, people just come into your life to help you grow. It is what it is.

What about Amy Santiago?

If there was another universe where Jake and Sophia somehow ended up together despite their contradictory occupations, what would have happened to Amy? After all, Jake and Amy were soulmates so, he being with Sophia would mean that Amy, too, would have to be with someone else. We just hope it’s not Teddy!

One possible partner for Amy could be Dave Majors (Garret Dillahunt) who showed up towards the end of season 2. He was a hotshot detective and an idol of Amy’s. The girl was ready to impress him no matter what it took. In fact, Majors, too, was interested in Amy and planned to ask her out after the case. Of course, this sent Jake into a spiral as he had feelings for his colleague.

While they go out together, Amy turns Dave down since she is apparently not into dating cops. It was revealed only later that she turned him down because she also had feelings for Jake.

Another character that would have been perfect for Amy was the Puzzle Master, Melvin Stermley. If there was someone who could be as good for her as Jake, if not more, it was him.

The two bonded heavily on their love for puzzles while solving a case of arson. Amy and Melvin hit it off immediately, despite her relationship with Jake and we cannot lie, they had great chemistry together. If not Jake, then Melvin for sure!

Of course, their chemistry could be linked to the fact that the Melvin actor, David Fumero, is the actress’ husband in real life. They got married in 2007 and have two children together.

So, there you have it. If Jake ended up with Sophia, Amy probably would have gone forward with Melvin and we wouldn’t have complained! Although, we are pretty happy that Peraltiago was the endgame.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is available to watch on Netflix.
