Wilmington falls to Port Allegany in State Quarterfinals

DUBOIS, Pa. (WKBN) – State-ranked Wilmington saw their season come to an end with a 38-20 loss to undefeated Port Allegany in the PIAA Class 1A State Quarterfinals on Friday.

The Gators scored on their opening drive, when junior running back Aidan Bliss rushed into the endzone from 2-yards out. Port Allegany took an early 8-0 lead.

But Wilmington would respond on their first possession. Sophomore Chase Mitcheltree scored from 5-yards out. In the 2nd quarter, Mitcheltree would strike again with a 56-yard touchdown run to give the Hounds a 14-7 advantage. He finished the game with 185 yards rushing.

Port Allegany would answer on the ensuing drive with a 50-yard touchdown run from Bliss. After a two-point conversion, the Gators would take a 16-14 lead in halftime.

Gator’s sophomore Gavin Moses picked a Wilmington pass in the 3rd quarter, and returned it 18-yards for a touchdown. Port Allegany extended their lead to 22-14.

Wilmington would strike back quickly with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Wesley Vass-Gal to Fred Zehetner. The Hounds closed the gap to 22-20.

Port Allegany would find the endzone twice more in the 3rd with a one-yard touchdown run from sophomore Kellen Veilleux, and a two-yard score from Bliss, who finished the game with over 290 yards rushing.

The Greyhounds finish the season as District Ten champions with overall record 8-3.

Port Allegany will now advance to play either Fort Cherry (13-0) or Clairton (13-0) in the PIAA Class 1A State Semifinals next week.
