HERMITAGE, Pa. (WKBN) — Wilmington took down Greenville for the second time this season, 26-21, to claim the District 10 Class 1A Championship on Saturday at Hickory High School.
Wilmington sophomore running back Chase Mitcheltree lead the way for the Greyhounds with three rushing touchdowns on the night.
The Greyhounds opened up the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run from Mitcheltree to take a 7- 0 lead in the first quarter.
Greenville would respond quickly with a touchdown pass from Nick Solderich that saw Cale Thurber catch it 40 yards downfield then lateral it to Justin Schell, who took it another 40 yards in for the score.
In the second quarter, Wilmington junior Jamie Miller punched in a one-yard touchdown before Mitcheltree added his second touchdown on a 15-yard run to push the lead to 20-7.
But the duo of Solderich and Schell would show up again on an impressive 39-yard touchdown connection to bring the Trojans back within a score, as Wilmington maintained a 20-14 advantage at halftime.
Wilmington would add to the lead when Mictheltree found the end zone for the third time to push the lead back to 12 just before the end of the third quarter.
Greenville would then cut it down to a five-point deficit after Thurber finished off a scoring drive with a one-yard QB sneak.
But Wilmington was able to come up with a big stop on defense after Greenville almost converted a fourth and 28 on a hook and ladder that came up one yard short.
The Trojans season ends with an 11-2 record after the loss, the most wins for the program since 2014-15.
With the win, Wilmington improves to 8-2 and will advance to the PIAA tournament against Port Allegany on Nov. 22 or 23.
