Wolves, Southampton join Atletico Madrid in race for £16m Algerian attacker?

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton are reportedly scouting Hertha Berlin’s Ibrahim Maza, who is also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid and Leicester City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton have reportedly joined the race for Hertha Berlin youngster Ibrahim Maza.

The 18-year-old is also said to have attracted the interest of newly-promoted Leicester City and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid at the beginning of the 2024-25 term.

Maza has made a standout start to the campaign for the capital club, scoring three goals and providing one assist across 12 Bundesliga 2 appearances.

Graduating from Hertha’s youth academy in 2023, the attacking midfielder has already featured in more competitive matches this term than he managed during the entirety of the 2023-24 season.

Formerly in the youth ranks of Germany, Maza has since represented Algeria on the senior stage, earning his maiden cap against Togo during October’s international break.

Wolves, Southampton join race for Hertha’s Maza?

According to Sky Sports Deutschland, three Premier League clubs have joined the list of runners in the race for the services of Hertha Berlin prodigy Maza.

The report states that all of Wolves, Southampton and Brentford have been impressed by the performances of the youngster at the start of this season.

It is understood that the trio of Premier League sides are set to send scouts out to the German capital to monitor the progress of Maza in greater detail.

With potential to grow into a top-flight star, Maza would not be available on the cheap, with Hertha supposedly set to demand up to €20m (£16.7m) for the midfielder.

There is said to be a growing consensus that the Algerian will leave the club if they fail to secure promotion to the Bundesliga this season.

Plenty of options for Maza

As the January transfer window draws nearer, the list of potential suitors for the signature of Maza from across Europe grows larger.

The standout name in the bunch of interested parties has to be Atletico Madrid, although it is unlikely that the 18-year-old would enjoy regular game time at the La Liga powerhouses.

By that logic, a switch to a low-level Premier League club could be the smartest move for Maza during the early stages of his senior career.
