The woman killed by a driver who allegedly ran a red light over the weekend was a “truly special” Mobile Mardi Gras queen, according to the Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association.
Katherine Ashley Smith, crowned the 2017 queen, was “a truly remarkable individual who touched the lives of many,” the association said in a Facebook post.
“Katherine’s presence in this world was truly special, and her legacy will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her,” the tribute to Smith went on to say. “Her kindness, grace, and strength have left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.”
A friend of Smith’s late father mourned Smith’s death on social media.
“She was such a beautiful young woman, inside and outside,” the user posted.
Another mourner wrote: “My heart is broken. Our forever Queen! Praying for Katherine’s family, & friends. A soul gone too soon.”
A woman who knew Smith said she was “thankful that I was blessed to cross paths with such a beautiful soul.”
Smith was crossing Airport Boulevard on McGregor Avenue, when Spencer Strickland, 37, allegedly ran a red traffic light and crashed his pickup truck into Smith’s SUV, Mobile police said Sunday.
Strickland was arrested and transported to Metro Jail, where he is being held without bond on a charge of manslaughter.
