You Won’t See Mahershala Ali’s ‘Blade’ Movie For Atleast the Next 3 Years, If New Rumored Update is to Be Believed

The world of superheroes and villains will soon be overtaken by the realm of the supernatural. Marvel has its fair share of things that go bump in the night, Blade being among the top 5 of that list. But Mahershala Ali’s promised film featuring the vampire hunter remains elusive, now more than ever.

After being announced at the tail-end of Infinity Saga, the MCU is almost closing in on its next chapter of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. And yet, the franchise fails to keep its end of the bargain about the Daywalker.

Does Hell Need to Freeze Over Before MCU Gets Its Blade Reboot?

In 2024, Ryan Reynolds got his on-set nemesis from Blade: Trinity aka Wesley Snipes to reprise his iconic bloodthirsty role 20 years later in Deadpool & Wolverine while having him openly snark at MCU’s current Blade production. A year ago, fans would have claimed that hell would freeze over before Reynolds and Snipes would even agree to be in the same frame together, thus dismissing the whole premise as impossible.

But against all logic, Wesley Snipes donned his Blade suit for the 4th time, walked side by side with Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and made his grand MCU multiverse debut – all before Marvel could even settle on a director for Mahershala Ali‘s film, let alone come up with a working script for the Blade reboot.

To say that luck has abandoned Ali’s project would be an understatement. It seems that Marvel, in its search for the perfect script and director, is sacrificing one essential element in Blade‘s production: timing. The leading man, when Blade was announced, was already 45. By the time Marvel settles on a script, director, and production schedule for the film, he may as well be 55. And that poses a serious problem for the fate of the franchise.

Mahershala Ali Has a Long Road Ahead of Him

The known universe, with its heroes and marvels, but what of the darkness? In our modern world, this is where monsters dwell…

In a recent Discord Q&A, Marvel insider Alex Perez from The Cosmic Circus said, “I was told that the supernatural side of the MCU would be explored heavily post-Secret Wars.” Marvel sure has bigger plans for Mahershala Ali’s Blade than the single voice cameo footnote entry in Chloé Zhao’s Eternals. The 2-time Oscar winner has always been destined for greater things but Ali’s continued dedication to Blade and his perseverance toward seeing the role brought to life has kept the fans from losing all faith in post-Endgame MCU.

According to Perez, Marvel is looking to set up the Midnight Sons as the next big superhero chapter after the Multiverse Saga with Blade leading the supernatural team of heroes in the post-Secret Wars era. Not only will Marvel lean into a more fantastical and mystic world-building but bring Mahershala Ali along to helm the next big chapter of the franchise. Such a task would be difficult if the actor is closing in on his 60s when Midnight Sons is greenlit.

They want to make Blade the face of the upcoming supernatural saga they’ve got cooking. But to make him the face, they need to give him a good introduction and do the character justice by giving him a hell of a story to get the audience invested in him and that saga because if Blade doesn’t do well, then the Midnight Sons storyline will suffer as a result. So, right now, it’s all about finding the right story to tell for him.

However, with Marvel hinting at stalling Blade until after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars, the production of Mahershala Ali’s film takes a serious blow. On the other hand, the film will definitely get ample time to fine-tune its story and help the MCU survive in the era of Superhero fatigue after its highly controversial Multiverse Saga.

Avengers: Secret Wars will arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.
