YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN)- A transitional homeless shelter for the LGBTQ community is set to open next year.
Full Spectrum Community Outreach is laying out its plans for the shelter.
Full Spectrum has launched a new housing division. They also announced a new goal for their new homeless shelter, with hopes to have it running in 2025.
It’s going to be a six bed shelter that’s fully operational. It’s a separate facility from their outreach center. It’s a 30-90 day transitional housing specifically to provide safe housing for homeless LGBTQ adult members.
The shelter will also offer life skill classes, training, volunteer opportunities, and housing assistance. The housing Director Charity Weidow says this project has been a 5 year process.
“There are other shelters like this but they are so far from the are at least 40 miles. We have one in Pittsburgh one in Cleveland and because they’re so far away they fill up really fast. so our hope is that we will be able to help the population in the best way that we can,” said Weidow.
She has a personal connection to the project. Weidow once was homeless with no LGBTQ-safe housing.
“When I was homeless there was nothing like this. I am just so glad now as an adult who has settled into the life that I am living now, that I get to give back to the community in that way and offer that safety and security,” Weidow said.
Full Spectrum has a goal of raising $30,000 This will be used for home renovations and equipment purchases. They’re asking the community for monetary donations or if they want to help out in other ways they can stay up to date on their Facebook page.
