YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State went for two and the win in overtime to beat Northern Iowa, 39-38, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium.
After Tyshon King found the end zone in the first overtime, head coach Doug Phillips sent the offense back out for the two-point conversion and quarterback Beau Brungard scrambled around and connected with Austin Bray for the win.
Brungard finished the day 31-of-36 passing for 256 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 78 yards and two more scores.
YSU junior Max Tomczak caught a team-high nine passes for 80 yards and a TD while Cyrus Traugh added 31 receiving yards and another TD.
The Penguins jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter before Northern Iowa scored the next 21 points to take the lead into the fourth.
But Brungard and company marched down the field to score and take a 31-28 lead with just over a minute to play before Northern Iowa forced overtime with a field goal as time expired.
With the win, YSU improves to 4-8 on the season and finishes with a 3-5 mark in Missouri Valley Football Conference play.
