Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan has been making waves in the anime and manga industry with its intriguing narrative and unique characters. However, fans still have found some small mistakes that, although don’t affect Dandadan’s popularity, still give a reason for haters to criticize the series. One of the most important issues, according to the fans in Dandadan, is Seiko Ayase.
Seiko Ayase is the grandmother of the main character, Momo Ayase, who is famous throughout the Dandadan world as Santa Dodoria. She is a popular spirit medium, and her role in the series is to help Momo and Okarun through their issues and guide them through their journey. She is quite powerful, and although she might look rude, she has quite an empathetic personality.
When the Dandadan series started, Seiko Ayase was one of the most popular characters, but still, fans couldn’t wrap their heads around the fact that she might be 50-80 years old but looks 20-25 years old. Thus, it became a debatable topic within the fanbase. But what fans fail to realize is that Seiko’s age is just a running gag, as there are other older women in the series, and their age is justified by their looks.
The Controversy Behind Seiko Ayase’s Age
Seiko is one of the most important supporting characters in Dandadan. Her knowledge of spiritual affairs is the most profound in the entire series, and she almost always has a solution to every kind of problem. But her biggest strength is her connection with the local gods, who let her borrow their powers and use them as she sees fit.
While Seiko is extremely popular among fans, some of them have expressed issues with her being a grandmother but still having the appearance of a young woman around the age of 20 to 25 years old. In fact, even her outfits don’t justify her age at all. Although it does not have any effect on the narrative of Dandadan, it puts Seiko in a stereotypical category within the community.
There are quite a few old women who do not look their age, and it has become a major concern for the anime and manga community. Characters like Tsunade from Naruto, Quanxi from Chainsaw Man, etc. fall into this category. And now Seiko has also joined them.
Yukinobu Tatsu Learned From His Own Mistakes
While it has not been officially confirmed by Tatsu as of yet, but the difference between Seiko’s age and her looks is just a running gag. It does not have any other motive behind it, and this was clarified when Yukinobu Tatsu introduced other older women characters in the series.
One of the biggest examples of this is Banga, the adoptive mother of Bamora and a Sumerian.

Although Banga has not yet made an appearance in the anime, she is part of one of the most compelling and thrilling arcs of the entire Dandadan series. She is quite skeptical of nature and deeply hates men, maybe because of her past.
However, characters like Banga are the perfect explanation for all the allegations that fans have placed on Tatsu regarding Seiko’s character. It proves that he had no ulterior motive while creating Seiko in Dandadan, and the entire reason behind her appearance was to use it as humor.
Dandadan is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
