Jon Cooper has taken issue with the two goaltender interference calls made against his team on Monday.
Prior to the Tampa Bay Lightning‘s elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team had two goals waved off in Game 5 against the Florida Panthers due to goaltender interference.
The first came in the first period when Anthony Cirelli and the Lightning thought they had opened the scoring after the forward found a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it past Sergei Bobrovsky. Instead, it was determined that Anthony Duclair had interfered with the netminder.
Later, in the second period, a second Lightning goal was waved off. Facing a 2-1, Mikhail Sergachev put a shot on net that appeared to be a game-tying goal. However, officials immediately called it off as they deemed Cirelli to be the perpetrator of goalie interference this time around.

The first goal was initially put on the board but was removed after a coach’s challenge by the Panthers, while the second goal did not initially count and was confirmed as no-goal following a coach’s challenge by the Lightning.
Talking to reporters after the Lightning’s 6-1 loss, Cooper addressed the two calls.
“So that was clearly a turning point in the game. If anybody’s going to talk about this game, they’re going to talk about the goals that were taken away,” said Cooper.
“In this league, where goals are at a premium, all we’ve done is make the rules for more goal scoring. That’s what we’ve done; every year there seems to be something we tweak so more goals can be scored. And that’s great, but there’s mandates, and the words were, to pull a goal off the board it has to be unbelievably egregious. That’s the standard to pull a goal off the board.”

According to Cooper, there was nothing egregious about the first goal that was waved off.
“Well, the first one is on the board, and I couldn’t find anything remotely egregious about that. It was really tough, like (Panthers defenceman Gustav) Forsling is holding on — like it’s a full penalty — to Duclair. So he’s trying to yank, he’s trying to get his balance, and it really does affect nothing. Bob misses the puck. It’s a net-front battle and it’s in the net.”
In regard to the second goal, Cooper once again boiled it down to just the result of another net-front battle.

“So then we had to rebound from that (first goal being waved off), we do, and then the next one is a net-front battle,” Cooper said. “I will give the goalie credit, he quit on the play, he completely quit. He didn’t see (the puck) and then flailed. There was, I mean, maybe incidental contact at most. But now we have to challenge it because (the referees) saw the reaction of the goaltender. And again, it’s like, well then are net front battles not allowed anymore? That’s part of everybody’s game. … I think we’re letting the goalies off the hook. They’ve got way more pads on than everybody else does. So, you know, the egregious part, I couldn’t see it.”
While Cooper acknowledged that his team was already down 3-1 in the series and gave all the credit to Florida for the win, he did express his belief that what happened changed the momentum of Monday’s game.
“It’s the circumstance that we were put in that I felt — this is just my opinion — was a little unfair,” he said.
