While underrated upon its release, as John Carpenter’s The Thing failed to make it big commercially following its competition with other sci-fi releases at the time, time has been kind to it. Not only has the sci-fi horror gone on to garner cult status, but many have also deemed it among one of the greatest films the genre has to offer, even deeming it more important than Carpenter’s Halloween.
And the film’s influence is significantly visible in InnerSloth LLC’s Among Us. Hence, it only makes sense for the upcoming adaptation of the game to take further inspiration from the horror, and following its synopsis, it seems like the case.
Among Us Synopsis Draws Similar Storyline From John Carpenter’s The Thing
Fans of John Carpenter’s The Thing, which is a remake of the ’50s The Thing From Another World, would remember the plot revolves around a group of scientists trying to survive the attack of an alien. The titular alien, which lurks among them, holds the ability to shapeshift into different living creatures, including people, thus making it harder for scientists to recognize the imposter.
It’s not hard to see the similarities between the film and Among Us‘ plot, with the latter even featuring a reference to The Thing with one of its kill animations. And with an Among Us animated series on the work, the synopsis for it released is unsurprisingly similar to that of John Carpenter‘s classic, as it seems the series will embrace its The Thing roots. The synopsis read (via Deadline):
“Members of your crew have been replaced by an alien shapeshifter intent on causing confusion, sabotaging the ship, and killing everyone. Root out the ‘Impostor’ or fall victim to its murderous designs.”
With CBS Eye Animation Productions helming its production, the casting for voice artists in the upcoming series is already underway.
Character Descriptions for Blue, Cyan, and Black Have Been Revealed
With the production for the animated series moving forward, CBS has now incorporated Dan Stevens, Liv Hewson, and Kimiko Glenn into the mix. Per Variety, Dan Stevens, known for Downton Abbey, will voice Blue, and his description reads Doctor, Knowledgeable, charming, and hot, whose task involves physical and emotional care.
Kimiko Glenn, who rose to prominence for starring in Orange Is the New Black, will voice Cyan, who is said to be a Gemologist, who heals through crystals and her task involves supervising the vibes.
Liv Hewson, known for their work in Santa Clarita Diet, will voice Black, whose description reads Geologist, Stoic, coarse, rock-like, and their character’s task involves supervising the ore shipments.
While time will tell how much the series will take from John Carpenter’s The Thing, it’s safe to assume the show will at least reference the iconic film, which is not too different from it on paper.
