Arturs Silovs won’t have to pay for a meal in Vancouver anytime soon.
The 23-year-old rookie goaltender led the Vancouver Canucks to the second round with a 1-0 win over the Nashville Predators on Friday in Game 6.
And he did it in style.
Silovs stopped all 28 shots he faced and became the youngest (23 years, 42 days) goaltender in Canucks franchise history to record a playoff shutout. He broke the injured Thatcher Demko‘s record (24 years, 270 days) that was set in Round 2 of the 2020 playoffs with a 4-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Silovs was also the first rookie goalie in Canucks history to record a series-clinching win.
Not bad for a guy who started the series as the Canucks’ third option between the pipes.
Silovs was forced into action in Game 4 after both regular starter Demko and backup Casey DeSmith went down with injuries.
The moment hasn’t proved too big for the young Latvian, and he’s taken the opportunity and run with it. Over his three starts in Round 1, Silovs finished with a 1.70 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.
And Friday was his best yet in one of Vancouver’s biggest games in nearly a decade.
“Guys are confident with him in the net,” Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet said after the game.

Silovs doesn’t deserve all the credit in the series, however, as both Demko and DeSmith also recorded a win. It’s just the seventh time in NHL history that a team has won a series starting three different netminders and just the third time in the last 50 years.
The Canucks and their new star will now head to Round 2 for a date with Connor McDavid and the high-flying Edmonton Oilers.
With Demko’s status still up in the air, Silovs could very well get the call for Game 1.
