Canada’s Denis Shapovalov wins opening match at Madrid Open

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was victorious in his opening match of the Madrid Open on Wednesday scoring a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., fired seven aces, won 80 per cent on first serve and converted on three of six break point attempts. He also committed six double faults.

The 25-year-old Shapovalov is looking to bounce back after falling to 132nd on the ATP rankings.

Shapovalov will next play Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry, who had a bye to the second round as the No. 26 seed.

Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime plays Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka on Thursday.
