Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime stunned fifth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway 6-4, 7-5 Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.
Auger-Aliassime had three aces and won 76 per cent on first serve but also committed four double faults and converted just three of eight break point opportunities.
The 23-year-old from Montreal is 35th in ATP rankings.
Ruud, who is ranked No. 6 in the world, fired six aces and had zero double faults but won only 59 per cent on first serve.
Auger-Aliassime will play top-seed Jannik Sinner of Italy in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Sinner advanced with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Russian player Karen Khachanov.
