There’s a new point guard in the bayou and it’s Toronto’s own Shayeann Day-Wilson.
Day-Wilson, 20, is transferring from Miami University to LSU ahead of her senior season, the team announced on Wednesday.
She spent one season in South Florida with the Hurricanes, averaging 11.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Prior to that, Day-Wilson spent two years at Duke University. Her rookie campaign remains the most impressive collegiate season of her career thus far, as she put up 12.7 points per game to go with three rebounds and 3.7 assists, earning the ACC Freshman of the Year award as a result.
A Biosteel All-Canadian, Day-Wilson won two medals with Canada’s U23 women’s national team at GLOBL JAM, a gold in 2022 and a silver in 2023. According to ESPN HoopGurlz, she was the top Canadian guard in the class of 2021.
Major motivation behind her decision to leave Duke for Miami was the plethora of Canadians on the Hurricanes roster, as she joins Lemyah Hilton, Lashae Dwyer, Sophia Zulich, and high school teammate Latasha Lattimore. Now, she’ll be heading to a completely new environment with major title aspirations and not as many familiar faces.
Day-Wilson will be playing for an LSU team that is only two years removed from a national title. They entered this year’s March Madness tournament as a three-seed before losing to eventual runner-ups Iowa and Caitlin Clark in the Elite Eight. Meanwhile, Miami failed to make the tournament after a 19-12 season.
The 5-foot-6 guard will look to help head coach Kim Mulkey usher in a new era, one without star forward Angel Reese, who went seventh overall in this year’s WNBA draft.
LSU wasn’t done there as they also announced the additions of Kailyn Gilbert and Mjracle Sheppard on Wednesday as well.
