The Fallout TV series will finally bring Bethesda’s beloved post-apocalyptic RPG franchise to television screens soon. The adaptation has been in the works for a whopping five years.

The show is only confirmed for one season so far, as the creators want to focus on quality. We break down everything you need to know about the latest video game adaptation.

Unlike most video game adaptations, the Fallout TV series won’t directly follow the plot of any existing game. Instead, the show is an original story that follows the journey of Vault 33 dwellers venturing out into the wasteland for the first time.

According to co-creator Jonathan Nolan, the team wanted to deliver a “terrific first season” with a self-contained story, avoiding the pitfalls of other game adaptations like Halo which prioritized setting up big events to milk the franchise in the long run. Quality is paramount to the Fallout producers.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are executive producers on the project, with Bethesda’s Todd Howard, creator of the Fallout series, also involved as an executive producer. His involvement ensures the series stays true to the spirit of the franchise, and doesn’t impose on any of his ideas for Fallout 5.

The series boasts a talented cast led by British actress Ella Purnell from the hit series Yellowjackets and Maleficent. She’ll portray Lucy, a young Vault Dweller veering into the wasteland. Opposite her will be Walton Goggins, known for his work on Justified and The Shield, playing the role of noseless bounty hunter Cooper Howard, also known as the Ghoul.

The show will also feature a number of guest stars throughout its run. Kyle MacLachlan, best known for Twin Peaks, joins the cast as Lucy’s father, while Moisés Arias will portray her brother. Appearances by Mike Doyle, Johnny Pemberton, Cherien Dabis, Dale Dickey, and Matty Cardarople are confirmed as well.
