CT mom killed, two children hospitalized after car crashes into tree

A Waterbury mother was killed and her two young daughters suffered minor injuries in a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday morning, police said.

Officers responded to the area of 168 Jersey St. in Waterbury around 8:34 a.m. on Tuesday on a report of a motor vehicle that hit a tree, according to the Waterbury Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers located the driver and two children who were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Jermiyiah Pegue, was transported to Waterbury Hospital with serious injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said.

The two children, identified as 3-year-old girls, were evaluated at the hospital for minor injuries and released, according to police.

Officers learned that Pegues was the mother of both children in the vehicle, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waterbury Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit at 203-346-3975.
