FLINT, MI – The next Miss Michigan Teen USA could be from Flint.
SeRhyi Johnson, a freshman at Academy West High School, is competing in the annual contest as Miss Flint Teen.
This is Johnson’s second year entering the pageant since she participated as Miss Genesee County in 2022.
Anyone can vote for their favorite contestant through the People Choice’s portion of the Miss Michigan USA 2023 and Miss Michigan Teen USA 2023 competitions until Friday, June 2 at 11:59 p.m. Each vote costs $5, but an unlimited number of ballots can be cast.
To cast a vote for Miss Michigan Teen USA Fan Favorite or People’s Choice, visit the website, scroll through the list of contestants, click the “vote” button under the contestant’s name and enter a number of votes.
“(The title) would mean a lot because it’s my second year doing it,” Johnson said. “So, to win the second year, that would be fun.”
The winners will be crowned during the final show at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 3 at McMorran Entertainment Center, 701 McMorran Blvd. in Port Huron. Tickets to the final show and the preliminary show at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2 can be purchased online.
The show consists of an athletic apparel and cocktail dress portion. Then, the judges hold a private interview with each contestant.
“They have to dress interview appropriate and they come in there and ask them a couple of questions just to try to get a feel for each contestant,” Chantia Wynn, Johnson’s mom, said.
Wynn said it’s been fun to watch her daughter compete in pageants.
“I think it’s awesome to see her … just because she wanted to find her lane of something she was good at, and it just happened to be that,” Wynn said. “It’s great, it’s cool.”
Wynn said she owes a portion of Johnson’s development as a pageant participant to Adriana Lanice, Johnson’s modeling coach and the owner of La BelleWerk agency.
“(Lanice) helped to build her self-esteem, to know that she can do this and be confident in it,” Wynn said.
After competing last year, Johnson said has a better understanding of what to expect the second time around.
“It starts off a little stressful and then once we get to the competition it’s fun,” Johnson said. “It’s fun being back (stage) and getting to watch.”
Johnson said she had the chance to meet Amariyanna “Mari” Copeny, or Little Miss Flint, during the pageant in 2022, when Copeny was running as Miss Flint Teen USA.
“We’re actually good friends now,” Johnson said.
The Miss Michigan Teen USA competition coincides with Miss Michigan USA. The contestants with the highest amount of votes are guaranteed spots in the finals. Contestants with the second highest number of votes are guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals.
Johnson said she appreciates all the votes she receives.
“I just want to thank everybody for their support,” Johnson said.
