In a letter to the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, the mother of Marilena Perikleous, requests an explanation for the sentence imposed by the court for the death of her daughter in July 2020.

The same letter:

A normal woman, not particularly educated, unknown to many. Now I have something that sets me apart though. I too am a mother grieving for her child. Her child who was unjustly lost on the asphalt, due to someone else’s carelessness.

What I wanted when I went to Court to hear the sentence to be handed down to the driver of the vehicle involved, was justice. Instead I saw a justice incomplete. A justice that ultimately favors the accused.

No report on the victim. My daughter. She, like so many others, paid the price of fatal accidents with her life. And I heard how insignificant my daughter was to justice. How insignificant all the victims are.

I cried, more than any other day for my daughter. For our Marilena. I heard the judge talking about the young age of the culprit. Our Marilena? Wasn’t she young? He was 19 years old. And her own dreams? Her own future? Her own studies? Her own relationship? It was probably all unimportant to justice.

Shame… The least I can say. Sad but always proud to be the mother of Marilena Perikleous. I hope I’m the last mom to hear that her child’s worth is worth two years in prison.
