Jeremy Renner started his Marvel journey as Clint Barton / Hawkeye in the 2011 film Thor and continued his role throughout the MCU series, till Hawkeye. The events of Avengers: Endgame left a lasting impact on fans as well as Renner. After Avengers: Infinity War shocked everyone by turning half of the population into dust including some of our favorite superheroes, Endgame was filled with poignant moments.

In Endgame, Clint Barton turns into a vigilante, Ronin, after his family is decimated during the Blip. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow tracks him down, persuading him to return and help the Avengers with one final mission to defeat Thanos. This mission leads to one of the most saddest moments in the film.
Jeremy Renner Forgot The Details From His Emotional Scene With Scarlett Johansson

Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton and Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff share a close friendship throughout the Avengers series. In Avengers: Endgame, Clint and Natasha embark on a mission to retrieve the Soul Stone from Vormir. However, they discover that obtaining the stone requires the sacrifice of a loved one. Beating Clint to the act, Natasha willingly jumps off the cliff in a heartbreaking scene, sacrificing herself.
Renner appeared in an interview with BuzzFeed to promote his Marvel miniseries, Hawkeye. Hailee Steinfeld, introduced to the MCU as Kate Bishop in the series, also appeared alongside Renner. The two were answering an MCU trivia quiz, when they encountered the question, “In Avengers: Endgame, what is Natasha’s final line when she and Clint are on Vormir?”.
Jeremy Renner’s response was surprising, as he appeared to have forgotten the details of the scene. Renner’s immediate response to the BuzzFeed quiz was:
“I was in that scene. I have no idea.”
It’s possible that Renner either panicked or attempted to forget the painful scene that many fans expected to end differently, with Clint Barton sacrificing himself.
The Scene Was Still Very Painful For Jeremy Renner

However, Jeremy Renner first gave an answer “Tell them yourself”, which was not part of the available options. The Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol actor was referring to the moment just before Natasha goes for the jump. However, Renner gave the right answer in his second attempt, “It’s okay”. This refers to Natasha’s comforting words to Clint when she asks him to let her go so that he can retrieve the Soul Stone and get his family back.
It appeared that Barton hadn’t forgotten the scene after all. However, the Mayor of Kingstown actor made it clear that the scene haunted him even two years after the film was released. Renner shared with BuzzFeed:
“That scene hurts me by the way. It’s really affected my personal life. It breaks my heart, that scene.”
Hawkeye provided a heartfelt conclusion to Jeremy Renner’s character, offering him a much-needed standalone series. The series explored Clint Barton’s trauma following the events of Avengers: Endgame. In January 2023, Jeremy Renner was involved in an accident where he was hit and run over by his snowplow. Renner was immediately flown to the hospital and survived the incident, with doctors suggesting that his physical strength helped him survive the accident.
Renner is now on the path to recovery and was recently spotted with his Marvel co-stars, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth. Hawkeye, Avengers: Endgame, and all other MCU projects are now available for streaming on Disney+.
