A Midfield murder suspect is behind bars after six months on the run.

George Eric Peppins, 47, was taken into custody Monday, according to court records made public Thursday. He is charged with murder in the 33-year-old Koreyanta “Koko” Davis, a mother of two who was shot to death Sept. 2, 2023.

Peppins, a convicted sex offender, was stopped in a vehicle by Bessemer police. That vehicle is now in police custody as evidence

Midfield police Chief Jesse Bell said he’s happy that Peppins has been captured.

“Now we can start the process in the court system,’’ Bell said.

Midfield police received a 911 call at 9:51 p.m. that Saturday reporting a physical altercation in the 500 block of Henson Street.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, officers found Davis lying near the edge of the street. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jeffries said Davis and another woman were involved in a physical altercation. While they were fighting, he said, Peppins pulled a gun and shot Davis.

Investigators initially released a photo of the suspect asking for help identifying him. He was quickly identified and charged.

Davis left behind two young sons.

“Koko was one of the most outgoing and caring people anyone could meet,’’ Carlos Chaverst Jr., executive director of the Carlos Chaverst Foundation, said after the woman’s death. “Koko always looked after others even while dealing with her own issues.”

“Everyone knew Koko and she was known to always make other people smile,’’ Chaverst said. “I know she’s smiling down on us now knowing she’s in a better place than this wicked world.”

Peppins is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail. He is also charged with felon in possession of a firearm, failure to appear, and violation of the sex offender registry.

The investigation is ongoing.
