Manhunt for fleeing suspect ends with arrest in laundry room of a Hueytown home

A Friday-morning search for a suspect in Hueytown ended when he was found hiding in the laundry room of a home.

The ordeal began about 7:30 a.m. when a Hueytown police detective spotted a vehicle driving recklessly and almost hitting the detective head-on in the area of Allison-Bonnet Memorial Drive and Townhouse Lane, police said.

The detective tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop.

Initially, police lost sight of the suspect, but began checking the area and located it on 26th Avenue near Arcadia Circle. The vehicle, police said, had crashed into a pole and the suspect had fled the scene.

An Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dog from William Donaldson Correctional Facility was brought in, as well as the Jefferson County sheriff’s office. A perimeter was established.

Hueytown 911 then received a call that the suspect was hiding in the laundry room of a residence on King Street. It was not his home, police said.

The suspect, who has not been identified pending formal charges , was taken into custody without further incident. Police said they determined the vehicle driven by the suspect had been stolen out of Birmingham.

“We would like to thank our citizens who provided crucial information in assisting us in apprehending the suspect,’’ police said in a statement. “This is another example of someone who does not live in our city coming to our city to commit crimes.”
