DETROIT – It used to be the home of both Engine 10 and Ladder 4 companies. Now a wine bar, this former firehouse has been named one of the 24 best new restaurants of 2023 by Bon Appetit.
Ladder 4 Wine Bar is located at 3396 Vinewood Street in Detroit. The structure was built in 1910. Ladder 4 closed there in 2000 with Engine 10 closing in 2012. Restoration on the building began in 2019.
Ladder 4 is not only a wine bar, but it serves a full menu of food with items like chicken liver parfait, scallops, leeks, eggplant, rainbow trout, fried chicken and steak. Desserts include cheesecake and lemon posset.
“Chef John Yelinek doesn’t traffic in the sort of predictable small-plates-meant-for-sharing menu we’ve come to expect of a wine bar,” Bon Appetit wrote. “The food isn’t just delicious, it’s exciting and even a little cheeky. While all the plates are wonderful, the sweet potatoes cloaked in soft cheese and pumpkin seed dukkah, for instance, or the juicy, lavish pork chop schnitzel, more technical dishes like that sausage, along with the stellar setting, add up to a truly memorable meal.”
Ladder 4 also has a bottle shop. It’s open Wednesdays through Thursdays from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. and Sundays from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m.
The other closest restaurant to Michigan which made Bon Appetit’s list is Indienne Chicago, an Indian fine dining restaurant.
