Well, for those eager to deter them before they leave a slime of destruction in their paths, then you’re in luck!

That’s because a green-fingered social media user named Jean Quinn took to Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK and shared the £3 bargain buy from Boots she swears by – Epsom Salts.

“To help keep the slug population down try clearing slime from paths with vinegar. Apply with a hand mister. It will help to stop them from mating,” she penned.

“If one gets slug slime on one’s fingers when gardening, vinegar will remove it.

“Epsom salt sprinkled in a ring around a plant will deter slugs and snails. Wear gloves when applying Epsom salts.

“A cup of Epsom salts mixed with five gallons of water can be used to rid plants of pests.”

The top tip was flooded with praise from others who all pointed out they were enduring endless issues with slugs damaging their plants.

“Fantastic advice as always Jean. If you put all this in a book, I’d buy it,” wrote one.

“I try to digest all your knowledge, much like the slugs devour my plants! I shall be trying some of your tips!”

A second commented: “Thank you. Slugs are the bane of my life, I live in an old cottage and they find their way inside.

“Everything is a work in progress here. I can implement some of these things easily. My Hostas will appreciate it too.”

Elsewhere, another had a more unusual suggestion and noted: “I just sprayed Fry Light garlic flavour on some of my plants last year.

“It worked well.”

And it’s not the only gardening trick that’s gone down a storm online lately, with people also impressed with the two second-watering can trick that will stop unwanted weeds from constantly “popping up” in the garden.

Perhaps the best part of all? You only need three ingredients and you’ll likely already have them in your kitchen cupboards.

A woman named Mary Westhead took to Facebook page ‘Gardening Hints and Tips‘ and asked: “I’ve got so many weeds popping up need a good way to kill them please I’ve tired some weed killers but they just come back.”

She was inundated with suggestions, with many advising a combination of vinegar, salt and washing up liquid.

“I fill an old watering can with white vinegar, salt and a bit of dish liquid,” one person explained.
