MSP: Woman killed relative, 73, in Mackinac County

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI – A woman has been charged with open murder in the shooting death of her 73-year-old relative on Thursday evening in Mackinac County.

Joelle Chamberlain, 34, was arraigned on an open murder charge and is being held without bond, Michigan State Police troopers said Friday, May 26. Open murder encompasses both first- and second-degree murder.

The incident unfolded late Thursday, May 25 at a residence just north of Hessel, which is located off of M-134 east of I-75. That evening, troopers received reports of a disturbance involving a firearm at the residence.

When troopers arrived, they found the 73-year-old man dead with an apparent gunshot wound. A short time later, Chamberlain was located just down the road from the residence and troopers talked with her.

Troopers say they observed “numerous indicators” that Chamberlain was involved in the homicide and she was arrested. Troopers said Chamberlain is related to the 73-year-old man but didn’t say how.

Both the deceased man and Chamberlain are residents of the Hessel and Pickford area, troopers said.

Troopers aren’t yet releasing the name of the man who was killed.

Troopers were assisted by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Tribe Law Enforcement, Clark Township EMS and the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab in Grayling.
