During today’s proceedings, the 44-year-old accused of the quadruple fatality that occurred 30 minutes after the arrival of the new year at a photo-controlled intersection on the Limassol-Platron road answered not admitting to all the charges brought against him.

Victims of the unspeakable tragedy that marked Pangyprio, the eldest daughter of the family, Evanthia, 27 years old, and the little son, Nikolas, 17 years old. With them, their grandparents, Nikolas Zavros and grandmother Vathoulla, 72 and 74 years old respectively. The Criminal Court room was once again attended by first degree relatives of the four victims who watched the proceedings.

THE son of the two old men, came to Court wearing a black t-shirt with the pictures of the victims. The lawyer of the accused Lambros Pieris stated that he is in discussions and consultations with the Legal Service in relation to the charges his client is facing so that there is an amendment regarding the charges of homicide. He also noted that the entire witness material has been handed over to him. To 44-year-old defendant 10 charges were brought to which he pleaded not guilty.

The four charges relate to the offense of murder, which carries a life sentence. The other 4 relate to the offense of causing death due to a thoughtless, reckless or dangerous act or behavior in violation of article 210 of the Criminal Code, while the other two categories relate to driving at a speed likely to endanger human life and failure to comply with a traffic light which was marked red.

The Criminal Court set a new hearing on June 26, 2024. Until then, the accused will remain in custody at the Central Prisons as a sub-trial. As Philenews revealed in a previous report, the accused was driving his vehicle at a speed estimated at 108 km per hour, which is twice the speed limit on the particular road where the multiple fatal collision occurred. The speed of the vehicle involved was calculated in a scientific way and a key factor was the recording of the vehicle by a security camera.

From the time the vehicle is seen until the collision, the time duration is measured and analyzed to derive the speed, while other factors are also taken into account (lighting, brake signs if any, etc.).
