In hockey, there will always be differing opinions on what should or shouldn’t be penalized — from what the officials think, to the coaches and players, to the fans watching.
There were undoubtedly some of those differing opinions after Washington’s T.J. Oshie took a big hit up high from New York’s Artemi Panarin in Tuesday’s Stanley Cup playoff game between the Rangers and Capitals.
After taking contact to the head, Oshie fell to the ice from the impact and was attended to by a team trainer.
The referees reviewed the play to see if a major penalty was warranted, but they ruled instead that there would actually be no penalty to Panarin for the hit.
The only skater that did receive a penalty on the play was Capitals forward Connor McMichael, which was doled out for roughing, resulting in a power play for the Rangers. McMichael had gone after Panarin following the hit.
Oshie was pulled from the game by the team’s concussion spotter, per head coach Spencer Carbery, but did eventually return to the ice.
The Rangers ultimately secured a 4-3 victory to go up 2-0 over the Capitals in Round 1.
