The 76ers-Knicks first-round series has been rife with explosive endings and electric displays of emotion, but it may have gotten the best of Nick Nurse on Tuesday night.
During the 76ers’ instant classic Game 5 win, staving off elimination, the head coach reportedly suffered a finger injury rendering him incapable of drawing up plays near the end of the thriller, according to SNY’s Ian Begley.
Nurse apparently slammed his hand down in frustration because of a call, something not too untoward for him considering the former Raptor head coach’s propensity to argue with referees.
It’s unclear when it may have occurred, but Begley mentioned that Nurse was completely incapable of drawing up plays in the second half as he couldn’t grip a marker.
Luckily, the nature of their win over the Knicks came on some unscripted magic tricks from breakout star Tyrese Maxey. Drawn-up plays didn’t seem to be needed after Maxey’s heroics.

Weirdly enough, this is the second coaching injury in a matter of days as Timberwolves bench boss Chris Finch suffered a torn patellar tendon during Minnesota’s Game 4 win over the Phoenix Suns after getting knocked over into the front row.
Whether it affects Nurse going forward is still unknown, as the severity of the injury has yet to be disclosed. However, an injured coach certainly won’t help a team looking to come back from a 3-1 deficit for the first time in franchise history.
After surviving Tuesday, the 76ers and Knicks head back to Philadelphia for Game 6 on Thursday.
