CAMP BATTLES FOR SUPPORT ROLES
Here’s yet another indication of Ottawa’s roster growth and development. The biggest battles in training camp are going to involve the third and fourth line and the final pairing on defence. The top six up front and the top four D spots are pretty much locked in, barring injury.
With a healthy Josh Norris back and Tim Stutzle evolving into a star, the first two centre positions are set. Stützle will have Brady Tkachuk and Claude Giroux on his wings and newcomer Vladimir Tarasenko will probably slot in alongside Norris and Drake Batherson on Line 2. Batherson might have to switch sides and play left wing, but he has already said he is willing to do that.

Will Shane Pinto be signed and ready to assume his third-line centre position (see Key Question below)? That will impact how things shake out. If Pinto is back, prospect centre/wing Ridly Greig will be in a battle for a spot on either the third or fourth line. Otherwise, he will grow his game in AHL Belleville.
New winger Dominik Kubalik will probably inherit the third-line left-wing position, with Mathieu Joseph on the other wing. But if GM Pierre Dorion has to move a contract to accommodate Pinto, that could open up a forward or defence spot.
Look for PTO Jason Bailey to fight for a fourth-line spot, but he will be in tough considering how much the coaching staff likes Kelly Parker and with newcomer and tough guy Zack McEwen signed to a new three-year deal.
On the blueline, big rookie Tyler Kleven and former UND teammate Jacob Bernard-Docker will be in a battle to try to stick around as a sixth or seventh defenceman. Currently, Erik Brannstrom and Travis Hamonic look to have a firm hold on third pairing spots.
The top four are set in stone, except for the occasional pairing switch-up by the coaching staff. Thomas Chabot with Jakob Chychrun and Jake Sanderson with Artem Zub are the strongest top four the Sens have had in years.
The goalie position looks set with incoming veteran Joonas Korpisalo and holdover Anton Forsberg.
KEY QUESTION: Can they sign Pinto?
Dorion addressed nearly every question this summer. To start, he signed free agent goaltender Korpisalo to a five-year contract, Ottawa’s latest attempt at shoring up a goaltending situation that has been in flux since Craig Anderson moved on. Neither Matt Murray (with some salary still on the books) nor Cam Talbot worked out as a No. 1 here.
Next, Dorion reluctantly moved scoring winger Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings after DeBrincat balked at signing long term with the Senators. The return was not overwhelming – winger Dominik Kubalik, defence prospect Donovan Sebrango and two draft picks (a conditional first and a fourth-round pick). However, when considered in conjunction with the signing of free-agent winger Tarasenko, the Sens were able to address a scoring need as well as add forward depth and get a first-round pick.

About the only thing left on Dorion’s to-do list was to deliver a contract to restricted free-agent centre Pinto. In part, the deal was made more difficult because the Senators ran out of cap space after the $9 million spent on Tarasenko and Korpisalo for 2023-24. Dorion is probably going to have to move a contract (Joseph? Brannstrom?) to free up room for Pinto. Pinto, 22, is a reliable, likeable two-way centre who scored 20 goals and had 35 points in his first full NHL season last year, while playing all 82 games.
“We’re working on that one, hard,” Dorion said last week, regarding a Pinto deal. “We’d like to see him next week when we open camp.”
At the moment, there’s nothing Senators fans would like to see more than that. It should get done. But the longer it takes, the more speculation there will be that Pinto could get traded. I just can’t see that happening.
