GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Grand Rapids Public Schools staff member died in an Sept. 19 afternoon accident on the job, officials said.
The operations team member died from injuries suffered after noon at Briggs Field, which is an athletic facility off Knapp Street Southeast owned and maintained by the district, officials said.
No children were present when the incident occurred, officials said. The male staff member was conducting maintenance in the area when the incident occurred, said district spokesman Leon Hendrix.
The man was found by people passing the field, Hendrix said. The circumstances of the accident have not been determined by investigators at this time, Hendrix added.
Authorities contacted the staff member’s family, officials said, adding “those who worked closest with him” were notified.
“We are devastated by this loss, and we are working with our crisis response personnel to ensure support is available for anyone who needs it,” Superintendent Leadriane Roby said in a statement. “In this difficult time, please keep our colleague’s family at work and at home in your thoughts.”
The name of the staff member has not been released at this time. State and local authorities will review the incident, officials said.
