When it comes to the the first Monday in May, we know to expect the unexpected on the red carpet. But as Taylor Russell makes her debut at the 2024 Met Gala, nobody will be surprised that the actor is gracing the famed steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Loewe.
Russell has been long been linked to Loewe, and cemented herself as designer Jonathan Anderson’s muse when she opened the brand’s spring 2023 show in Paris. Since then she’s been a Loewe stalwart, earning a global ambassador title and a campaign. “When we work together it’s always an incredible creative dialogue–she is an amazing collaborator and a very special friend,” Anderson tells Vogue of his collaboration with Russell.
Even if the duo’s reunion was to be expected, they still managed to pull out plenty of surprises for the big night, of which Loewe is a sponsor. Anderson looked to biomimicry for inspiration for her look. Russell wore a high-neck corset designed to resemble a wood marquetry pattern. She paired her trompe l’oeil top with a circle skirt made of a silk crêpe marocain, which featured a thigh-high slit and draped venetier waist.
Russell’s trompe l’oeil corset was 3D moulded to fit her body perfectly, and then printed with the wood pattern using a technique called hydro sublimation, which the brand previously employed for spring 2023. “Playing with the senses is central to the experience of the exhibition and we play similar tricks with trompe l’oeil in collections at LOEWE, blurring the line between what’s real or surreal, what’s natural or unnatural,” Anderson says.
