For some, last night was all about having two looks. Co-chair Zendaya wearing two John Galliano designs and walking the carpet twice? Talk about iconic! But for the stars who didn’t want to schedule an outfit change, the next best thing was to unveil another outfit at the top of the stairs.
Actress Rebecca Ferguson arrived on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet in an oversized silk cape from Thom Browne. The look was dramatic and made for a statement. However, she soon unveiled that there was more to her ‘fit than meets the eye. Ferguson unfurled her cape, revealing a baby blue lining adorned with ravens in reference to Brown’s fall 2024 show. Underneath was a custom high-necked gown that bedazzled with sequins, which the actor wore for the rest of the evening.
Usher also partook in the trend. At the bottom of the stairs, the singer posed in a custom Alexander McQueen cape, which was soon passed off to his handlers as he walked up a few steps. Underneath was a dazzling black suit embroidered with red roses.
The trend, which we like to call “the great unveiling,” allows designers to showcase their elaborate designs in a more practical way. Because the Met Gala involves so much movement (mingling over cocktails, a walk-through of the Costume Institute’s latest exhibit, a seated dinner, and a performance) wearing a massive cape would be rather inconvenient. With an unveiling, though, no one has to compromise the glamour and the spectacle of a Met Gala arrival.
