The 2024 Met Gala’s Best Vintage Moments

These days, what is old really is new. Sometimes the hard-to-find has ever more allure that the latest thing. In an age of individuality and desired-virality, wearing vintage is one way to stand out from the crowd. Remakes have now entered the conversation as well. A few pieces in “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” were recreated by the houses for the exhibition. As was the case on the red carpet. At Balenciaga, Demna recreated a 1951 dress by the house founder for Nicole Kidman, and for Isabelle Huppert reinterpreted the show’s finale look, a breathtaking 1931 Callot Soeurs wedding for the actor, who is maternally related to one of the founders of the turn-of-the-century Parisian maison. The focus on sustainable practices extended beyond the museum walls to the red carpet where guests including Penelope Cruz in Chanel, Chloë Sevigny in Dilara Findikoglu, and Ivy Getty in Connor Ives, wore dresses made of upcycled materials.
